Payments authentication data, merchant opinions and trends in new report by Ravelin

LONDON, 22 October 2024: Fraud and payments solutions vendor Ravelin has released the Global Payments Report 2025: Regulation, Authentication, Security to help companies who accept payments online to make better decisions and power their secure growth.

Spread over 40 pages, the findings include 3D Secure (3DS) performance rates, merchant attitudes to authentication, payment security, and related topics, as well as regulations analysis and a Secure Customer Authentication (SCA) mandates map.

The report is available to download for free on the Ravelin website.

It combines internal data from Ravelin's servers, results from Ravelin’s online merchant opinion survey, and expert analysis.

The metrics and findings can inform the decision-making of payments and fraud professionals working for businesses that are active in the online space, allowing them to accept more payments with confidence. This is especially true for those who sell products and services to consumers in more than one country.

Key findings

Among the payments authentication data released, 3DS success on a global rate was 79% while the average global frictionless authentication rate was found to be disappointingly low (64%). This means that only 6 in 10 customers experienced a friction-free shopping journey.

The UK
boasts the strongest 3DS rate
(93%) and 3DS challenge success (94%) rate out of the 37 countries featured while in the USA, 3DS success is a disappointing 41%.

In the merchant survey, fraud protection was identified as the top reason why merchants authenticate. 75% of merchants say they expect to authenticate more often in the future.

The report complements analysis of SCA mandates around the world, card scheme expectations and latest developments by Ravelin's Senior Product Manager for Authentication, Catherine Jones. Also included is advice to merchants and PSPs by Ravelin's CEO, Martin Sweeney.

AI-native Ravelin is celebrating its tenth anniversary this month, and has reaffirmed its commitment to providing cutting-edge technology, as well as conducting and releasing original research and data to help not just its clients but the industry as a whole.
